Stars come in many different sizes, from tiny to gigantic! Some stars are smaller than our Sun, and some are so enormous they could swallow up our entire solar system. The size of a star depends on how much gas and dust it was made from when it was born.
Our Sun is a medium-sized star. Red dwarf stars are much smaller and cooler than the Sun. They are the most common type of star in the universe. Giant and supergiant stars are much bigger and hotter. The biggest stars are called supergiants, and they burn through their fuel very fast. Smaller stars burn their fuel slowly and can last for billions of years.
- The biggest known star is so large that if it were placed where our Sun is, it would stretch past Jupiter.
- Red dwarf stars can shine for trillions of years because they burn their fuel so slowly.
- Our Sun is about halfway through its life and will keep shining for another five billion years!
