Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and is often called the “Red Planet.” Its surface is covered in reddish-brown dust and rocks, which is what gives it that red color. Mars is about half the size of Earth and is one of our closest planet neighbors.
Mars has the tallest mountain in the solar system, called Olympus Mons. It also has a giant canyon called Valles Marineris that stretches across the whole planet. Mars is very cold and has a thin atmosphere. Scientists have sent robots called rovers to drive around Mars and take pictures and collect samples.
