We have seasons because Earth is tilted! Earth does not stand straight up as it goes around the Sun. It leans to one side, and that tilt is what gives us spring, summer, fall, and winter.
When your part of Earth is tilted toward the Sun, you get more sunlight and it feels warmer. That is summer! When your part tilts away from the Sun, you get less sunlight and it feels colder. That is winter! Spring and fall happen in between. It takes Earth one whole year to go around the Sun and cycle through all four seasons.
- When it is summer in the United States, it is winter in Australia.
- The Earth’s tilt is about 23.5 degrees.
- If Earth was not tilted at all, we would not have any seasons and the weather would stay the same all year!
