Kwanzaa is a very special holiday that celebrates African American family, community, and culture! It starts on December 26 and lasts for seven days. Kwanzaa is a time for everyone to come together, share tasty food, and tell stories about their heritage.
Families decorate their homes with red, black, and green. Each night, they light a candle on a special candle holder called a kinara. Each candle stands for an important idea, like working together and being creative. Families set out a straw mat with ears of corn and baskets of fruit. On the last day, children might get small gifts like books or art supplies.
- Kwanzaa is a happy time to celebrate being part of a community!
- The word Kwanzaa comes from a Swahili phrase meaning “first fruits.” The kinara holds seven candles, one for each day of the celebration.
