Long ago, a group of people called the Pilgrims sailed across the big ocean on a ship named the Mayflower. They wanted to find a new home where they could live and work in their own way. When they landed in America, the winter was very cold, and life was hard.
The Wampanoag people had been living on this land for a very long time before the Pilgrims arrived. The Wampanoag were kind and helpful neighbors who taught the Pilgrims how to plant corn and where to catch fish. When the harvest was ready, everyone was so happy! They had a big feast together to say thank you for the food and their new friends.
This special dinner was the very first Thanksgiving. It showed that people can help each other and share what they have. Today, we still celebrate Thanksgiving to be thankful for the good things in our lives.
- The first Thanksgiving feast lasted for three whole days!
- The Mayflower carried about 100 passengers across the ocean.
- The Pilgrims did not actually eat turkey at the first Thanksgiving, but they did have fish and deer!
