Rules tell us what we should and should not do. Your school has rules like “walk in the hallway” and “raise your hand to speak.” These rules keep everyone safe and help the day go smoothly. Laws are rules made by the government that everyone in a city, state, or country must follow. If you break a law, there can be serious consequences, like paying a fine.
There is a difference between rules and laws. Rules are made by parents, teachers, or coaches for a home, school, or team. Laws are made by the government for a whole city or country. One of the oldest sets of written laws is called Hammurabi’s Code. It was written around 1754 BC in ancient Babylon. It had 282 laws carved into a tall stone pillar! Even traffic lights are based on rules. The first traffic light was set up in London, England in 1868. It helped keep people safe on busy streets.
- Hammurabi’s Code was carved into a stone pillar over 7 feet tall and is now in a museum in Paris, France.
- The first traffic light in London in 1868 used red and green gas lamps, but it exploded after about one month!
- The United States has so many laws that no one knows the exact number, but there are thousands of federal laws alone.
