The Southern Ocean surrounds Antarctica at the very bottom of the Earth. It is the second smallest ocean, but it has the wildest waves and strongest winds of any ocean. The water is very cold, usually between 28 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Giant icebergs float through it.
Penguins love the Southern Ocean! Emperor penguins, the tallest penguins in the world, dive deep into these waters to catch fish. Leopard seals hunt near the edges of the ice. Huge groups of tiny animals called krill live here too. Krill are only about 2 inches long, but they are food for whales, seals, and penguins.
- The Southern Ocean is home to many kinds of whales, including humpback whales and orcas.
- Colossal squids also live in the deep, dark waters.
- They can grow up to 46 feet long, making them the biggest squids on Earth!
