The Mediterranean Sea is almost completely surrounded by land. It sits between Europe, Africa, and Asia. It connects to the Atlantic Ocean through a narrow opening called the Strait of Gibraltar. That opening is only about 9 miles wide!
The Mediterranean Sea is warm and calm compared to the big oceans. Its water is very salty because not many rivers flow into it and the hot sun evaporates a lot of water. Bottlenose dolphins, loggerhead sea turtles, and octopuses live in the Mediterranean.
- People have sailed the Mediterranean Sea for thousands of years.
- Ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians all traveled across it!
- The sea is about 970,000 square miles, which is much smaller than an ocean.
- Its deepest point is about 17,000 feet, in a spot near Greece called the Calypso Deep.
