Yellowstone was the first national park in the world. It was created in 1872. Most of the park is in Wyoming, but small parts reach into Montana and Idaho. Yellowstone sits on top of a giant volcano. Heat from deep underground powers the park’s geysers, hot springs, and bubbling mud pots.
Old Faithful is the most famous geyser in the park. It shoots hot water and steam up to 180 feet into the air about every 90 minutes! Yellowstone has more geysers than any other place on Earth. The Grand Prismatic Spring is a huge hot spring with rings of bright blue, orange, and yellow.
- Grizzly bears, wolves, bison, and elk all live in the park.
- Yellowstone is one of the few places in the United States where bison still roam free.
- The park has about 900 miles of hiking trails and nearly 300 waterfalls.
- About 4 million people visit every year!
