Sherwood Forest is a famous forest in Nottinghamshire, England. It is best known as the home of Robin Hood, the legendary outlaw who stole from the rich and gave to the poor. People have been telling Robin Hood stories for over 700 years.
The forest is full of old oak trees. Deer, rabbits, woodpeckers, and rare beetles live there. Today Sherwood Forest is about 450 acres and is a protected nature reserve. About 500,000 people visit every year to walk the forest trails.
- The most famous tree in the forest is called the Major Oak.
- It is over 800 years old, and its trunk is so wide that 10 people holding hands can barely reach around it!
- The branches are so heavy that poles hold them up so they do not break.
- Long ago, Sherwood Forest covered about 100,000 acres, much bigger than it is today.
