Antarctica is actually the biggest desert in the world! A desert is any place that gets very little rain or snow, and Antarctica is so cold that it hardly ever snows. It sits at the very bottom of the Earth, around the South Pole. It is the coldest place on the planet.
No people live in Antarctica all the time, but scientists visit to study it. Penguins, seals, and tiny shrimp called krill live along the coasts. Almost the entire continent is covered in thick ice. In some spots, the ice is almost 3 miles deep.
- The temperature in Antarctica can drop to minus 128 degrees Fahrenheit.
- That is cold enough to freeze your nose in seconds!
- Even though it looks empty, Antarctica holds about 70 percent of all the fresh water on Earth, locked up in its ice.
- Antarctica is also the windiest continent on Earth.
