Mary McLeod Bethune was an inspiring teacher who built a school with only a dollar and fifty cents! She was a brave leader who fought for the rights of African Americans and women everywhere. Mary showed the world that anyone can build something great if they try!
Mary wanted African American girls to have a wonderful place to learn, so she started a school in Daytona Beach, Florida, with just $1.50. She and her students worked very hard to raise money by baking pies and singing songs! Her little school grew so big that it eventually became a famous college called Bethune-Cookman University. Mary also worked with presidents to make sure all kids had fair rules and good schools.
