Jackie Robinson is a famous baseball player and a true American hero! He did something incredibly brave by becoming the first African American to play Major League Baseball. Today, everyone celebrates Jackie Robinson for making baseball a game for everyone to enjoy!
In 1947, Jackie joined the Brooklyn Dodgers and became the first African American to play Major League Baseball. Before Jackie, Black players and white players were not allowed to play on the same teams. It was very hard at first, but Jackie was so strong and played so well that he helped change the rules forever! He won the Rookie of the Year award in his very first season.
- Every year on April 15th, all Major League Baseball players wear the number 42 to honor Jackie Robinson!
- No baseball player will ever wear the number 42 again because it was retired in Jackie’s honor.
