Sylvia Mendez is a real-life hero who helped make sure all children could go to the same schools and be friends! Her family fought to change unfair rules about who could go to which school. Every child is special and deserves a great place to learn!
Sylvia’s parents bravely went to a judge to change the unfair school rules. They won their case in 1947, and it changed the law so that all kids in California could learn together! This happened seven years before a similar decision was made for the whole country. Because of her family’s bravery, schools became places where children of all backgrounds could play and share.
- Sylvia received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011 for her family’s brave fight!
- She grew up to become a nurse and helped take care of people for many years.
- Sylvia still visits schools today to tell children her story about fairness and courage.
