People all over the world live in all kinds of homes! Some homes are big, some are small. Some are made of wood, some of brick, and some even of mud or grass. No matter what they look like, all homes do the same important job — they keep us safe, warm, and dry. Let’s look at some of the many different kinds of homes people live in!
Not all homes are big. A cabin is a small, cozy home often made of wood, usually found in the mountains or forests. A cottage is a small, charming home, often in the countryside. People have been building small, simple homes like these for hundreds of years.
A mobile home is a home that can be moved! Mobile homes are built in a factory and then placed on a piece of land. Some mobile homes are set up permanently in parks where many families live, while others really do get moved from place to place.
- The tallest apartment building in the world is in New York City. It is so tall that clouds sometimes float past the windows!
- About 36 out of every 100 American families rent an apartment rather than owning a house.
- Some people live on boats called houseboats — their home floats right on the water!
- The White House, where the President of the United States lives, has 132 rooms!
- In Tokyo, Japan, some apartments are so small they are called “capsule apartments” — each one is just big enough to sleep in.
