Have you ever talked to someone on a phone? Telephones let us talk to people who are far away. A long time ago, there were no phones at all! People had to send letters or visit each other to share news. Then a man named Alexander Graham Bell made the very first telephone in 1876. That first phone call started something big!
The first telephones looked very different from the phones we use today. They were big and heavy, and they were attached to the wall with a wire. You had to turn a little crank or spin a dial to call someone. These old phones could only make phone calls. You could not take pictures or play games on them! Families usually shared one phone in their home.
Today, many people carry small phones in their pockets. These phones have no wires at all! You can use them to call and text your family. You can also take photos, watch videos, and even look up fun facts. Phones have changed a lot in about 150 years. From big boxes on the wall to tiny computers in your hand, telephones keep getting better and better!
- The first words ever spoken on a telephone were when Alexander Graham Bell said to his helper, “Mr. Watson, come here!”
- The very first cell phones were so big and heavy that people called them “brick phones.”
- Today, there are more phones in the world than there are people!
