Silicon Valley is a place in California where many famous technology companies were started. But it was not always about computers! Long ago, this area was covered with beautiful fruit trees. Over many years, smart people came here and built new things that changed how we live. Let’s find out how it all happened!
A long time ago, the land we now call Silicon Valley was full of orchards. Farmers grew apricots, cherries, and plums. People called it the Valley of Heart’s Delight because it was so pretty.
Then a college teacher named Frederick Terman told his students they should start companies nearby instead of moving away. In 1939, two of his students, Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard, started a company in a small garage in Palo Alto. That garage is now called the Birthplace of Silicon Valley!
As tech companies grew and brought thousands of good-paying jobs to the Bay Area, more and more people wanted to live nearby. But there were only so many homes. When lots of people want to live somewhere and there are not enough homes, prices go up. Today, the Bay Area is one of the most expensive places to live in the whole United States. A tiny apartment can cost more each month than a whole house somewhere else!
