What Is a Map?

A map is a special drawing of a place from way up high! Imagine you are a bird flying in the sky, looking down at the ground. From the sky, you can see where houses, parks, and schools are located. Maps help us understand where we are and show us the way to new and exciting places.

Maps use little pictures called symbols to represent real things. A blue line might be a wiggly river, and a green tree might show us where a park is. There is even a map key that tells us what each symbol means. With a map in your hands, you can be an explorer and find your way anywhere!
