A very long time ago, people lived along a big river in a hot, sandy land called Egypt. These people built huge things that we can still see today! Ancient Egypt was one of the first great civilizations in the world. The people who lived there were very clever. They built huge pyramids, wrote with special pictures, and were ruled by powerful kings called pharaohs.
The ancient Egyptians built giant pyramids out of heavy stone blocks. The biggest pyramid is called the Great Pyramid, and it is taller than a 40-story building! It took thousands of workers many years to build it. The Nile River was very important to the people of Egypt. It is one of the longest rivers in the world. Every year, the river would flood and leave behind rich soil so farmers could grow food like wheat and barley.
The pharaoh was the king of Egypt. People believed the pharaoh was almost like a god! The Egyptians also wrote using small pictures called hieroglyphics. Each little picture stood for a word or a sound. They wrote on a special paper made from a plant called papyrus. The Egyptians loved art, music, and telling stories about their many gods and goddesses.
