Dandelion

Dandelions are some of the most common wildflowers in the whole world, and you can find them growing just about everywhere – in yards, parks, sidewalk cracks, and meadows! Their bright yellow blossoms are actually made of hundreds of tiny little flowers all packed tightly together, even though they look like just one flower. The name “dandelion” comes from a French phrase meaning “lion’s tooth” because the jagged leaves look a bit like pointy lion teeth. When the yellow flower is finished blooming, it magically transforms into a fluffy white ball of seeds that looks like a little cloud sitting on a stem!

If you make a wish and blow on that white fluff, the seeds fly away on their own tiny parachutes and can travel for miles on a windy day! Each dandelion can make about 2,000 seeds, so even one little plant can send thousands of baby dandelions off on an adventure. Even though some people think dandelions are just weeds, they are actually very important because they are some of the very first flowers to bloom in spring, giving hungry bees their first meal after a long winter. Dandelions are also completely safe to eat, and people around the world use the leaves in salads and even make the yellow flowers into jelly. Every single part of a dandelion is useful – the roots, leaves, and flowers!
