Sensitive Plant (Touch-Me-Not)

The sensitive plant, also called the touch-me-not, has one of the coolest tricks in the whole plant kingdom! If you gently touch one of its feathery leaves, it will quickly fold up and droop down in less than a second, almost like the plant is shy and wants to hide from you. But that is not all: if you touch one leaf, the folding can spread to the leaves next to it, making the whole branch look like it is falling asleep! The sensitive plant sends tiny signals through its body, kind of like how your nerves send messages to your brain when you touch something. This amazing plant originally comes from Central and South America.

After about fifteen to thirty minutes, when the plant feels safe again, it slowly opens its leaves back up and stands tall, ready for the next visitor. Scientists think this folding trick helps protect the plant in a few ways. When the leaves fold up, the plant suddenly looks smaller and less tasty, which might scare away a hungry caterpillar or grasshopper. The folding also shows off small thorns hidden on the stems, warning animals to stay away. The sensitive plant grows little fluffy pink puffball flowers that look like tiny cotton candy balls, making it both fun to touch and pretty to look at!
