Living stones are some of the best hide-and-seek players in the entire plant kingdom! These tiny plants look exactly like small, colorful pebbles or rocks sitting on the ground. They come in many different colors and patterns, including gray, brown, green, pink, and even orange, so they can blend in perfectly with the real rocks around them. Each living stone is made up of just two chubby leaves that are packed full of water, which helps the plant survive in the hot, dry deserts of southern Africa where it almost never rains. They are usually smaller than a quarter, so you would have to look very carefully to spot one!
Looking like a rock is actually a very clever trick called camouflage, and it helps the living stones hide from hungry animals that might want to munch on them. An animal walking by would just see a bunch of boring pebbles and keep on going! But once a year, something magical happens: a beautiful white or yellow daisy-like flower pops right out from the crack between the two leaves. The flower is often bigger than the whole plant, which makes it look like a tiny rock is suddenly blooming. There are more than 30 different kinds of living stones, and people all around the world love to collect them as houseplants!
