Water Lettuce

Water lettuce is a floating plant that looks just like a small head of green lettuce bobbing on top of the water, which is exactly how it got its fun name! Its leaves are soft, thick, and fuzzy, and they grow in a pretty circle shape called a rosette that can be as big as your hand or even bigger. The fuzzy hairs on the leaves trap tiny air bubbles that help the plant float, like wearing a life jacket made of fuzz. Water lettuce has been around for a very long time and grows in warm ponds, lakes, and slow rivers in tropical places all around the world.

Water lettuce doesn’t have any stems at all; instead, its long, feathery roots just hang down into the water like a thick, dangly beard to soak up all the nutrients the plant needs to grow. Fish and tadpoles love to swim and hide among these dangling roots, which give them a safe, shady spot away from bigger animals. Water lettuce loves warm, sunny weather and can grow very quickly, making baby plants on little runners that spread out across the pond like a floating green blanket. The leaves on top shade the water below, which helps keep it cool and stops too much algae from growing. Even though it is not real lettuce that you would eat in a salad, water lettuce is a really important plant that helps keep ponds healthy and clean!
