Seaweed

Seaweed is a name for many different types of plants and algae that grow in the ocean, and there are over 10,000 kinds in the whole world! It can be green, brown, or even bright red and pink, making the ocean floor look like a colorful underwater rainbow. Some seaweed is so tiny you need a magnifying glass to see it, while other kinds can grow longer than a school bus. Seaweed is super important for our planet because it makes a lot of the oxygen we breathe, just like trees do on land!

Seaweed doesn’t have roots like land plants; instead, it has a special part called a “holdfast” that helps it cling to rocks so it doesn’t wash away in the waves. It also doesn’t have a stem or real leaves, but it has flat, slippery parts called “blades” that soak up sunlight from the water. Many people around the world love to eat certain types of seaweed because it is packed with vitamins and minerals that keep you healthy. If you have ever eaten sushi, you have probably tasted seaweed already, because it is the dark green wrapper on the outside of a sushi roll!
