Mangrove

Mangrove trees are truly amazing because they can grow right in the salty water along the ocean’s edge, which is something most trees could never do! They have many twisty, tangled roots that grow above the water, making them look like they are standing on stilts or walking on spider legs. These special roots can actually filter out the salt from the ocean water so the tree can drink fresh water, which is a pretty incredible trick. Mangroves grow in warm, tropical places all around the world, from Florida to Australia to Africa, and some can grow over 80 feet tall!

The twisty roots of mangrove trees are very strong and help protect the land from big waves and powerful storms by slowing the water down before it hits the shore. The tangled underwater roots also create a safe hiding place for thousands of baby fish, crabs, shrimp, and even small sharks that are just starting to grow up. Birds like herons and pelicans love to nest in the branches above, while oysters and barnacles stick to the roots below the water. Mangroves are also superheroes for our planet because they are really good at cleaning the air and storing harmful gases that can make the Earth too warm. Scientists say we need to take good care of mangrove forests because they protect both the animals and the people who live near the coast!
