Bamboo

Bamboo is one of the most amazing plants on Earth because it is actually a type of giant grass, not a tree! It is the fastest-growing plant in the whole world and can shoot up as much as 35 inches in just one single day. That means if you watched it very carefully, you could actually see it growing! Bamboo has tall, hollow stems that are super strong, and some types of bamboo can grow over 100 feet tall, which is as high as a 10-story building. There are over 1,000 different kinds of bamboo, and they grow naturally in Asia, South America, and Africa.

People use bamboo to build all sorts of things because it is light, strong, and grows back so quickly. Houses, bridges, furniture, floors, musical instruments, fishing poles, and even soft clothes can all be made from bamboo! In many parts of Asia, bamboo is also a popular food, and people eat the young bamboo shoots in stir-fries and soups. Of course, bamboo is most famous for being the favorite food of giant pandas, who spend about 12 hours every single day munching on bamboo stems and leaves. A panda can eat up to 80 pounds of bamboo in one day, which is like eating a whole shopping cart full of food!
