Tulips are beautiful spring flowers that are shaped like colorful cups or bowls. They come in almost every color of the rainbow, including red, yellow, pink, purple, orange, and even ones with cool stripes! Tulips originally came from the mountains of Central Asia, and they became so popular in the Netherlands hundreds of years ago that some rare tulip bulbs cost more than a house. Today the Netherlands grows billions of tulips and is famous for its giant, colorful tulip fields that stretch as far as you can see.
Tulips grow from bulbs, which are round packages of energy buried in the ground, kind of like an onion. You plant the bulbs in the fall, and they sleep underground all winter long, waiting for spring. When the weather warms up, they push through the soil and show off their bright colors for a few wonderful weeks. Here is a cool fact: tulip flowers keep growing even after you cut them and put them in a vase of water! They can grow another inch or more while sitting on your table. There are over 3,000 different kinds of tulips, so if you saw one new kind every day, it would take you more than eight years to see them all!
