Strawberry

Strawberries are bright red, heart-shaped fruits that grow on small plants close to the ground, and they have a really cool trick that no other fruit can do: they wear their seeds on the outside! A single strawberry has about 200 tiny yellow seeds dotting its skin. Strawberries are not actually berries at all, even though they have “berry” right in their name. They belong to the same plant family as roses, which helps explain why they smell so sweet and wonderful when they are ripe.

Strawberries are one of the first fruits to ripen in the spring, and many families love to go strawberry picking at farms where you can fill up a whole basket! They are packed with Vitamin C, which helps your body fight off germs and keeps you feeling great. You can eat strawberries fresh right off the plant, dip them in chocolate, blend them into smoothies, or put them on top of cereal and ice cream. Strawberries also taste amazing in jam and on shortcake. The biggest strawberry ever grown was about the size of an apple, which is pretty wild for such a tiny little fruit!
