Blueberries are tiny, round fruits that grow on bushes, and they are one of the only foods in nature that are truly blue! They have a dark blue skin with a light, dusty coating that makes them look a little bit frosty. If you look closely at the bottom of a blueberry, you will see a tiny star shape, which is left over from when the blueberry flower was blooming. Blueberries originally come from North America, and Native Americans used them for food and medicine for thousands of years before any other people knew about them.
Blueberries might be small, but they are like tiny superheroes for your body! Scientists call them a “superfood” because they are packed with things called antioxidants that help keep your brain and heart healthy. A single blueberry bush can produce thousands of berries each summer, and many farms let families come and pick their own. You can eat blueberries by the handful right off the bush, toss them into your cereal or yogurt, blend them into purple smoothies, or bake them into the most delicious muffins and pancakes. Blueberries also freeze really well, so you can enjoy them all year long!
