Yucca plants have long, stiff, sword-shaped leaves that are very sharp at the ends, and some kinds are even called “Spanish Bayonets” because they look like pointy swords! These tough plants love to grow in sunny, dry places like deserts and sandy hills. Yucca plants are really useful too. A long time ago, Native American people used the strong leaves to make rope, baskets, and even sandals! The roots of some yucca plants can be mashed up and used like soap to wash your hair and clothes.
Every year, the yucca grows a tall stalk covered with beautiful white, bell-shaped flowers that smell wonderful, especially at night. Here is the coolest thing about the yucca: it has a best friend called the yucca moth! This tiny white moth is the only creature that can help the yucca make its seeds. The moth carries pollen from one yucca flower to another, and in return, the moth lays its eggs inside the flower so its babies have a safe, cozy place to grow and food to eat. Without the moth, the yucca could not make seeds, and without the yucca, the moth would have no home. They truly need each other!
