Los Altos is a small, quiet city in California. It is part of a famous area called Silicon Valley. About 31,000 people live there. The name “Los Altos” means “the tall ones” in Spanish, which comes from the tall redwood trees that once grew in the area. Today, Los Altos is known for its friendly downtown, beautiful neighborhoods, and great schools.
Downtown Los Altos has a charming Main Street with small shops, bakeries, and restaurants. Every Thursday evening in summer, the city holds a farmers market where families can buy fresh fruits and vegetables. Redwood Grove Nature Preserve is a peaceful park right in the middle of town where you can walk among tall redwood trees. The Los Altos History Museum teaches visitors about what life was like when the area was full of fruit orchards.
The Ohlone people were the first to live in this area for thousands of years. They gathered acorns and hunted near the creeks. In the late 1800s, farmers moved in and planted apricot, plum, and cherry orchards across the hills. The city was officially created in 1952, which makes it one of the newer cities in the Bay Area. Before that, it was just a small farming community.
