Mount Tamalpais is a beautiful mountain in Marin County, California. It is 2,571 feet tall. People who live nearby call it “Mount Tam” for short. From the top, you can see the Pacific Ocean, San Francisco, and even the Farallon Islands on a clear day! The mountain is part of a state park where families love to hike and explore nature.
The Coast Miwok people lived near Mount Tamalpais for thousands of years before European settlers arrived. The mountain’s name may come from a Miwok word. In the late 1800s, a railway was built so people could ride a train to the top! The train track had 281 curves, making it one of the crookedest railways ever built. Today the railway is gone, but people still hike and bike on trails where the tracks used to be.
- Mount Tamalpais is often called the birthplace of mountain biking! In the 1970s, cyclists started racing down its trails on special bikes.
