The Farallon Islands are a group of small, rocky islands in the Pacific Ocean near San Francisco, California. They are about 27 miles from the Golden Gate Bridge. No one lives on these islands except scientists who study the animals there. The islands are home to thousands and thousands of seabirds!
The Farallon Islands are full of amazing animals. Over 250,000 seabirds live on these rocky islands. You can find birds called common murres, puffins, and storm-petrels nesting on the cliffs. Seals and sea lions rest on the shores. In the fall, great white sharks swim in the water around the islands to hunt for seals. Whales also pass by the islands on their long ocean journeys.
- People used to collect millions of bird eggs from the islands to sell in San Francisco. This was called the “Egg Wars” because people fought over the eggs!
- The islands are made of granite rock that is millions of years old.
- Only a few scientists are allowed to visit the islands. Regular visitors are not allowed because the animals need to be kept safe.
