Animals are wonderful, but we have to learn how to be safe around them! Even friendly dogs and cats need their own space, especially when they are eating or sleeping. Learning how to behave around animals keeps both you and the animals safe.
If you see an animal you do not know, always ask its owner before you try to pet it. Stand still and let the animal come to you. Do not reach out to touch it until the owner says it is okay. You should never pull an animal’s tail or ears, because it might scare them!
Treating animals gently and quietly makes them happy and keeps you safe from bites or scratches. Never try to pet wild animals like squirrels or raccoons. If an animal growls, hisses, or looks scared, back away slowly and leave it alone.
- Dogs wag their tails when they are happy, but a stiff, still tail can mean they are nervous!
- Cats purr when they feel safe and relaxed.
- Animals use body language instead of words to tell you how they feel!
