You have two lungs inside your chest, and their job is to help you breathe! When you breathe in, air travels down a tube called the windpipe and fills up your lungs like two spongy balloons. Your lungs are one of the most important organs in your body.
Your lungs take the oxygen out of the air because your body needs oxygen to stay alive. Then when you breathe out, your lungs push out a gas called carbon dioxide that your body does not need anymore. Your lungs work all day and all night without you even thinking about it!
Taking deep breaths, being active, and staying away from smoke all help keep your lungs healthy and strong. Healthy lungs help you run, swim, sing, and play without getting out of breath. Your body needs oxygen every second of every day, so your lungs have a very important job!
- You breathe in and out about 20,000 times a day!
- Your right lung is a little bigger than your left lung because the left side shares space with your heart.
- If you could spread out all the tiny air sacs inside your lungs, they would cover an area as big as a tennis court!
