Your eyes work a lot like a camera! Light comes in through the dark circle in the center of your eye called the pupil. Your eyes let you see colors, shapes, and everything around you.
Behind the pupil, a lens focuses the light onto the back of your eye, called the retina. The retina then sends a message through a nerve to your brain, and your brain turns that message into the picture you see. All of this happens so fast that you do not even notice! Your pupil gets bigger in the dark to let in more light, and smaller in bright light.
Blinking keeps your eyes wet and clean, and tears wash away dust and germs. Your eyebrows and eyelashes help block sweat and dirt from getting in. To take care of your eyes, it helps to eat vegetables like carrots, take breaks from screens, and wear sunglasses on bright sunny days!
- You blink about 15 to 20 times every single minute!
- Your eyes can tell the difference between about 10 million different colors.
- Tears are not just for crying — your eyes make tears all day long to stay clean and moist!
