You breathe about 20,000 times every single day! Most of the time you do not even think about it. But when you take slow, deep breaths on purpose, something special happens inside your body.
Deep breathing works because of a big muscle under your lungs called the diaphragm. When you breathe in deeply, your diaphragm pulls down and makes room for your lungs to fill up with air. Your lungs have about 300 million tiny air sacs called alveoli. That is where the air you breathe gives oxygen to your blood.
