Being Kind to Yourself

Everyone has a little voice inside their head. That voice talks to you all day long. Scientists say your inner voice speaks about 4,000 words per minute! That is much faster than talking out loud, which is only about 150 words per minute.

Sometimes that voice says mean things like “I am so dumb.” Being kind to yourself means changing that voice to say helpful things instead. A scientist named Dr. Kristin Neff gave this idea a special name in 2003. She called it “self-compassion.” That means treating yourself the way you would treat a good friend.
