Rebecca Lee Crumpler was a caring and brave woman who loved helping people stay healthy! When she was a little girl, she learned all about taking care of sick people from her kind aunt in Pennsylvania. She worked as a nurse for a long time, learning so much about the human body and how to make people feel better!
In 1864, Rebecca made history by becoming the very first African American woman in the United States to earn a medical degree and become a doctor! She spent her life taking care of women and children, especially those who were very poor and didn’t have anyone else to help them. She even wrote one of the first medical books by an African American to share her knowledge and help moms keep their kids healthy!
