Daniel Hale Williams was a very smart and caring doctor who made history! When he was a young doctor in Chicago, he noticed that African American doctors and nurses didn’t have a place to work and learn. So, he opened Provident Hospital, which was the very first hospital in the country where people of all races could work together and get the best care!
In 1893, Daniel did something truly amazing that had never been done successfully before! A man came to his hospital with a very bad hurt near his heart, and Daniel carefully opened the man’s chest and fixed his heart with tiny stitches! It was the world’s first successful open-heart surgery! Dr. Williams showed everyone how incredible and capable doctors can be, and his brave work saved the man’s life!
