A musical is a special kind of show where the characters sing, dance, and act out a story on a stage. When characters feel happy, scared, or excited, they burst into song! Musicals use music and dancing to help tell the story. People love to watch musicals in big theaters, and kids can even perform in musicals at school.
In a musical, actors stand on a stage and perform in front of an audience. They say their lines just like in a play, but they also sing songs and do dance numbers. A group of musicians called an orchestra plays music in a space in front of the stage. The actors wear colorful costumes and the stage has painted backgrounds called sets. Behind the scenes, lots of people work together to make the show happen, including directors, costume makers, and lighting helpers.

The Lion King brings the story of a young lion named Simba to life on stage with amazing animal costumes and puppets. The Wizard of Oz follows a girl named Dorothy and her dog Toto on an adventure to find their way home. Mary Poppins is about a magical nanny who flies in with her umbrella and makes everything fun. Many of these musicals started on a famous street in New York City called Broadway!
