History
The Ohlone people lived in the area that is now Fremont for thousands of years before European contact. In 1797, Spanish missionaries founded Mission San Jose, the fourteenth of California’s 21 missions, near the base of Mission Peak. The mission became the center of a small farming community. Over the following century, several other small towns grew up nearby: Centerville, Niles, Irvington, and Warm Springs. Each had its own character — Niles became famous as an early filmmaking center, while Warm Springs was known for its natural hot springs.
By the mid-1900s, the five communities decided they would be stronger together. On January 23, 1956, they officially incorporated as the City of Fremont. The area transformed from farmland into a growing suburb, and later into a center of technology and manufacturing.
Parks and Recreation

Fremont Central Park is the heart of the city’s outdoor life. This 450-acre park surrounds Lake Elizabeth, where families can fish, paddle boats, and enjoy waterside picnics. The park includes four playgrounds and the popular Aqua Adventure Water Park, which features water slides and a lazy river. Mission Peak Regional Preserve draws thousands of hikers each year to its challenging trail that climbs to the 2,517-foot summit, rewarding them with panoramic views stretching from the Bay to the Central Valley on clear days.
Niles and the Movies
The Niles neighborhood holds a surprising place in movie history. In the early 1900s, before Hollywood became the center of the film industry, a company called Essanay Studios set up a film studio in Niles. The legendary silent-film comedian Charlie Chaplin made several of his early films there between 1914 and 1915. Today, visitors can explore this history at the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum and ride vintage steam trains on the Niles Canyon Railway, a heritage railroad that runs through the scenic Niles Canyon.
Technology and Industry
Fremont plays an important role in the Bay Area’s technology economy. The city is home to Tesla’s main automobile factory, where thousands of electric vehicles are built every day. The factory site has a long automotive history — it was originally a General Motors plant, then became a joint venture between General Motors and Toyota called NUMMI, before Tesla acquired it in 2010. The city is also close to Silicon Valley, and many tech workers live in Fremont and commute to jobs throughout the region.
Location and Transportation
Fremont covers about 77 square miles along the eastern foothills of the Diablo Range. The city is well connected by Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), with stations in the Warm Springs and Fremont neighborhoods that link residents to Oakland, San Francisco, and other parts of the Bay Area. Major highways including Interstate 880 and Interstate 680 pass through the city, and the Dumbarton Bridge provides a direct route across the Bay to the Peninsula.
