Starting Microsoft
In 1975, Gates and Paul Allen saw an article about the Altair 8800, one of the first personal computers ever made. They quickly wrote a version of the BASIC programming language for it, even though they did not own an Altair themselves. The software worked, and the two friends founded a company called Microsoft to sell it. Gates dropped out of Harvard University to focus on the business full time. Microsoft grew rapidly as personal computers became more popular throughout the late 1970s and 1980s.
Building a Software Empire
Microsoft’s biggest breakthrough came with the Windows operating system, which made computers much easier for ordinary people to use. Instead of typing complicated commands, users could click on icons and menus with a mouse. Windows became the most widely used operating system in the world, running on hundreds of millions of computers. Microsoft also created popular programs like Word for writing and Excel for spreadsheets. By the 1990s, Gates had become the richest person in the world, a title he held for many years.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
In 2000, Gates and his then-wife Melinda founded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the largest charitable organizations ever created. The foundation works to fight diseases like malaria and polio, improve education, and reduce poverty around the world. Gates gradually stepped back from his day-to-day role at Microsoft to spend more time on philanthropy. He has donated more than fifty billion dollars to charitable causes throughout his life. Gates has said that giving away his wealth to help others is the most important work he can do.
Legacy
Bill Gates changed the world by helping make personal computers a part of everyday life for millions of people. His vision that there should be “a computer on every desk and in every home” came true faster than almost anyone expected. Beyond technology, his charitable work has saved millions of lives by funding vaccines and health programs in developing countries. Gates continues to speak out about important issues like climate change and global health. His story shows how passion, determination, and a willingness to share success can make a lasting difference.
