Growing Up in Washington Heights
Miranda’s parents came from Puerto Rico, and he grew up surrounded by the sounds, languages, and cultures of his neighborhood. His father worked as a political consultant, and his mother was a clinical psychologist. From a young age, Miranda loved music and theater, and he started writing his own musicals while still in high school. He attended Wesleyan University in Connecticut, where he began working on the show that would eventually become In the Heights.
In the Heights and Hamilton
In the Heights, which opened on Broadway in 2008, tells the story of a Latino neighborhood in New York City and won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. But it was Hamilton, which opened in 2015, that made Miranda a household name. Hamilton tells the story of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton using hip-hop, R&B, and traditional show tunes, performed by a racially diverse cast. The show won 11 Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and it changed the way people think about who gets to tell the stories of American history.
Beyond Broadway
Miranda has also brought his talents to movies and television. He wrote the songs for the Disney films Moana and Encanto, including the hit song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” which reached number one on the music charts. After Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico in 2017, Miranda became a powerful advocate for the island, raising millions of dollars for relief and recovery efforts. He has used his fame to bring attention to causes he cares about, especially supporting Latino communities and the arts.
His Impact Today
Lin-Manuel Miranda has inspired a new generation of young people, especially kids from immigrant and Latino backgrounds, to see themselves in the stories told on the biggest stages. His work shows that American history and culture belong to everyone, no matter their background. Miranda continues to write, produce, and create new projects that bring diverse voices to the forefront of entertainment. He has proven that combining different musical styles and cultural traditions can create something powerful and new.
